History and development

The settlement history of Les Bayards follows the general pattern of Jura high-valley communities: small-scale farming, seasonal pasturing and gradual integration into regional manufacturing in the 19th and 20th centuries. Over time the municipality cooperated with neighbouring communes on infrastructure and services, reflecting the close social and economic ties across the valley.

Merger into Val-de-Travers

On 1 January 2009 Les Bayards joined eight neighbouring municipalities to create a single administrative unit. The federation included Boveresse, Buttes, Couvet, Fleurier, Môtiers, Noiraigue, Saint-Sulpice and Travers. These nine former municipalities now form the larger municipal entity of Val-de-Travers, intended to streamline administration, pool public services and strengthen economic planning for the valley.

Geography, economy and culture

Les Bayards occupied part of the valley floor and adjacent slopes typical of the Jura landscape, with mixed forests, pastures and small built-up areas. Historically the Val-de-Travers region is known for watchmaking and, more broadly, for culinary and cultural specialties of the Jura; it is also the area commonly associated with the historical production and cultural revival of absinthe. Today, local life emphasizes tourism, artisanal production and outdoor activities such as hiking and winter sports.

Legacy and notable facts

Although it no longer exists as an independent municipality, Les Bayards remains part of the valley’s identity: its buildings, local traditions and land use continue under the administration of the larger Val-de-Travers municipality. Visitors interested in Jura valleys and rural Swiss life can still find traces of the former village in landscape, parish records and local heritage projects.
