This article describes the writer. For the film adaptation of one of his works, see Lemony Snicket - Mysterious Events.

Lemony Snicket is a pseudonym of the American writer Daniel Handler. He has published numerous children's books under this name since 1999, including 13 volumes of A Series of Unfortunate Events. They are about three orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, whose parents were killed in a fire. Since then, they have been pursued by their relative Count Olaf ("Count Olaf"), who wants to get his hands on the children's large inheritance. The first volume of the series - The Bad Beginning - was published in 1999, and the 13th and last - The End - in 2006.

First person narrator

Handler gives the narrator Snicket his own personality, he is described in the books, details are told about him, and a biography was even published called Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography.

Once per book, Snicket gives the reader a glimpse into his life. We know that he

  • has a deceased love named Beatrice, whom he was not allowed to marry and to whom every book in the series is dedicated.
  • plays the accordion.
  • wrote the 2nd volume of the eerie story on the deck of his friend Bela's yacht.
  • was chased by an angry mob for 16 miles.
  • attended a masked ball to deliver a message to his beloved Beatrice.
  • once had a sword fight with a man who fixes TVs.
  • and his family lived in a large mansion.
  • had two siblings: Jacques and Kit Snicket.
  • was held prisoner in a castle by his enemies and managed to free himself by having calling cards printed on which he pretended to be an admiral in the French navy.
  • once got stuck with his chauffeur on an island surrounded by man-eating crocodiles.
  • wrote the third volume in a room whose window looked out on a graveyard.
  • wrote the 8th volume behind the altar of the Cathedral of the Alleged Virgin while a friend played a sonata on the organ to calm him down and so that the visitors in the pews would not hear the sounds of the typewriter.
