History and names

The university evolved from a group of local colleges and professional schools and later took the title Leeds Polytechnic before becoming a university. Over time it used several brands to reflect particular strengths, especially in sport and teacher education, which led to the familiar Carnegie association. The decision to rename the institution Leeds Beckett University in 2014 marked the most recent change in its public identity.
