Lawrence A. Pezzulo — U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay and Nicaragua

Early life and education

Pezzulo was born and raised in New York City. He completed higher education studies at Columbia University, preparing for a career in public service and international affairs. In February 1950 he married Josephine DiMattia; the couple raised three children.

Diplomatic career and context

As a career Foreign Service officer, Pezzulo held senior postings that placed him at the center of U.S. relations with countries undergoing political upheaval. His tenure in Montevideo (1977–1979) coincided with Uruguay’s period of civic–military rule; his term in Managua (1979–1981) overlapped with the end of the Somoza regime and the Sandinista takeover in 1979.
