Arkangel de la Muerte — Mexican luchador, champion, and trainer

Arkangel de la Muerte (Alfredo Pasillas) was a Mexican masked wrestler known for his work in CMLL, championship reigns, mask victory over Ángel Azteca, and later role as a head trainer. Died 2018.

Overview

Arkangel de la Muerte was the ring name of Alfredo Pasillas (born July 16, 1966; died June 13, 2018), a Mexican masked professional wrestler best known for his long association with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Performing as Arkangel after working earlier under the name Mister Cid until 1991, he built a reputation both inside the ring as a welterweight competitor and outside it as a respected trainer. His ring name, which translates as "Archangel of Death," reflected the darker, imposing persona he used in the squared circle.

In-ring career and notable achievements

Arkangel competed primarily in the welterweight divisions that form an important part of traditional lucha libre. Over his career he held the CMLL World Welterweight Championship and the Mexican National Welterweight Championship, titles that signal prominence among lighter-weight contenders in Mexico. One of his most memorable accomplishments was winning the mask of Ángel Azteca in a high-stakes lucha de apuestas (bet match), an event type in which masks or hair are wagered and which carries deep cultural significance in Mexican wrestling.

Role as trainer and influence

In later years Pasillas served as head trainer at CMLL's wrestling school, a position that placed him at the center of talent development for one of Mexico's oldest promotions. Trainers in CMLL are responsible for teaching fundamental techniques, ring psychology, character work, and the tradition-bound rituals of mask use and respect for lineage. Arkangel's work in the school helped shape a generation of performers and reinforced the workshop-style apprenticeship that remains central to lucha libre.

Groups, style, and distinguishing facts

  • He was a founding member of the factions Pandilla Guerrera and Los Guerreros Tuareg, groups that worked as mid-card ensembles and provided storyline structure within CMLL.
  • Arkangel's masked identity followed the lucha libre tradition in which a mask represents character, mystery, and a wrestler's legacy; losing an opponent's mask in a challenge is one of the most consequential outcomes in a luchador's career.
  • He also wrestled under the name Mister Cid early in his career before adopting the Arkangel persona around 1991.

Death and legacy

Alfredo Pasillas died on June 13, 2018, in Mexico City of a reported heart attack at age 51. His passing was noted within the lucha libre community for both his in-ring achievements and his contributions as a mentor.
