Cities and townships include Mentor, Painesville, Willoughby and smaller communities that serve as residential and commercial centers for the region.

History and development

The county grew as transportation and industry expanded along Lake Erie. Named for its shoreline, Lake County developed during the 19th and 20th centuries as railroads, shipping, and later highways connected it to Cleveland and other Midwestern markets. Post–World War II suburbanization increased population and diversified land use.

Economy, parks and recreation

Today the local economy blends manufacturing, services, retail, and recreation. Lake Erie shoreline parks and nature preserves attract visitors for boating, fishing and birdwatching; inland areas support small farms and light industry. Popular public spaces and state parks provide lake access and trails for residents and tourists.
