Overview

Kyrenia District lies along the northern coast of the island of Cyprus. Its central town, Kyrenia (also known by its Turkish name, Girne), is famous for a historic harbour and a medieval castle. The district is the only one of Cyprus's six districts that is entirely within the territory administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a self-declared entity that has limited international recognition.

Geography and climate

The district stretches between the Mediterranean shore and the Pentadaktylos (Kyrenia) mountain range, a narrow ridgeline that rises sharply from the coastal plain. This setting produces a varied landscape of rocky coast, beaches and terraced hillsides. The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters, which help support citrus groves, olive trees and vineyards in pockets of arable land.

Administration and settlements

Administratively, Kyrenia District contains three municipalities and multiple smaller communities. The municipalities are:

  • Kyrenia (Girne)
  • Karavas (Alsancak)
  • Lapithos (Lapta)

In total there are dozens of villages and communities — traditionally counted as 44 in local records — which range from seaside resorts to inland agricultural settlements.

History and cultural heritage

Kyrenia has a long history of settlement, maritime trade and strategic importance in the eastern Mediterranean. Archaeological remains, Byzantine churches, Venetian fortifications and Ottoman-era architecture reflect layers of past rule. The harbour and castle in the central town are focal points for the district's historical identity and attract interest for their architecture and museum collections.

Economy and tourism

Tourism is a major part of the contemporary economy, driven by beaches, coastal resorts, heritage sites and mountain trails. Local agriculture, small-scale commerce and services support resident communities. The district's facilities include marinas, hotels and restaurants oriented to both seasonal visitors and year-round residents.

Location and notable facts

Kyrenia District is compact but geographically distinct for its coastal-mountain contrast. Coordinates commonly given for the central town are 35°15′N 33°16′E. Because of the political division of the island, governance, property and heritage issues in the district are often intertwined with negotiations and arrangements at the island-wide level. Despite these complexities, Kyrenia remains noted for its scenic harbour, historic castle and the Pentadaktylos skyline.
