Okubo was born in 1897 and spent her final years in Kawasaki, Japan, where she lived in a nursing home with the support of her son. Following the death of Italian-born American Dina Manfredini Dina Manfredini on December 17, 2012, Okubo became the oldest living woman and the second-oldest living person behind Jiroemon Kimura. Context: supercentenarians and longevity
People aged 110 or older are referred to as supercentenarians. Such cases are rare and attract interest because they sit at the extreme tail of human lifespan distributions. Researchers and independent validation groups study these individuals to learn about genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors that may contribute to exceptional longevity aspects of longevity. Japan, in particular, has a high concentration of centenarians and supercentenarians, linked to diet, healthcare, and social factors.
Final years and death
Okubo spent her final days under care in a nursing facility in Kawasaki. She died of pneumonia on January 12, 2013, at about 12:00 pm, 19 days after celebrating her 115th birthday. Death from acute illness such as respiratory infection is common among very elderly people, whose immune systems and physiological reserves are diminished.
Legacy and succession
After Okubo's death she was succeeded in media lists and longevity records by Misao Okawa as the world's oldest living woman. Okubo remains part of discussions about longevity because her life illustrates patterns seen among validated supercentenarians: advanced age reached in relative comfort, local family support, and death from common geriatric complications rather than unusual causes.
