Overview

Krasimir Smilenov Bezinski (Bulgarian spelling) was a Bulgarian player born on 29 June 1961 in Blagoevgrad. Best known as a sturdy professional footballer, he spent nearly two decades on the pitch as a defender. His career included spells in Bulgaria, Portugal and Israel; he also represented his country at senior level.

Club career

Bezinski's club journey took him through five clubs, combining domestic success with overseas experience. Domestically he is most closely associated with Pirin Blagoevgrad and the prominent Sofia side CSKA Sofia. Abroad he had stints with Portimonense in Portugal and with Israeli teams Maccabi Ironi Ashdod and Hapoel Petah Tikva. His roles at these clubs were typically in central defence, where he contributed with marking, aerial play and leadership from the back.

International career

On the international stage Bezinski was capped 21 times for the Bulgarian national team between 1980 and 1993. While not a prolific goal-scorer, his selection over more than a decade reflects a consistency valued by national coaches. He appeared in qualifying campaigns and friendly matches that helped sustain Bulgaria's defensive options during a transitional era for the national side.

Playing style and reputation

Bezinski was typically described in reports and recollections as a traditional defender: disciplined in positioning, focused on direct defending and effective in aerial duels. He was respected for his professionalism and for adapting to different leagues and styles of play when moving from Bulgaria to Portugal and Israel. Team-mates and local supporters remembered him for workmanlike performances rather than flashy skill.

Later life and death

After retiring from active play Bezinski remained a part of the football community in various informal roles and through appearances connected to his former clubs. He died in Sofia on 22 April 2019 after a battle with colorectal cancer. Reports note he passed away in Sofia at the age of 57, and his death prompted tributes from fans and former colleagues.
