Overview and leadership

Koo served as chairman of LG Group for more than two decades. Under his stewardship the group emphasized international expansion, stronger consumer branding and greater competitiveness in electronics, chemicals and telecommunications. Koo was known for promoting professional management, strengthening research and development, and raising the global profile of LG-branded products. His leadership spanned the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s and subsequent waves of industry consolidation.

Corporate reforms and priorities

Rather than following a single doctrinal playbook, Koo pursued a mix of strategies aimed at sustainable growth. These included investment in technology and design, efforts to improve corporate governance, and support for marketing that positioned LG as a global consumer brand. He also oversaw restructuring in some business units to sharpen competitiveness and respond to changing international markets.

Succession and family

As part of succession planning, Koo adopted his nephew, Koo Kwang-mo, in 2004 to secure continuity of family leadership. This formal adoption was a notable example of how leaders of large family conglomerates in Korea have used legal family arrangements to prepare for future transitions. After Koo Bon-moo's death, his adopted heir assumed leadership roles within the group.

Legacy and death

Koo Bon-moo combined traditional family-led conglomerate stewardship with a modernizing emphasis on branding and international competitiveness. He also supported corporate philanthropy in areas such as culture, education and design. Koo died of brain cancer on 20 May 2018 in Seoul, closing a chapter in LG's corporate history and prompting a formal succession that continued the family's involvement in the company.
