History and development

The modern airline emerged in 1977 to replace the multinational East African consortium. In the 1990s the company entered a strategic relationship with KLM, signing a codeshare agreement in 1995 and allowing foreign participation in its ownership. As part of that restructure, KLM purchased a minority stake equating to about 26%, which helped modernize operations and expand international links.

Kenya Airways became a full member of the SkyTeam airline alliance in 2010, joining global partners to offer coordinated schedules, shared lounges, and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits. The carrier maintains bilateral partnerships and codeshares to extend its network beyond its own routes.
