Geography and communities

Located immediately south of Cincinnati, Kenton County’s landscape includes river plains, rolling hills, and built-up urban corridors. Major municipalities and population centers include:

  • Covington — the largest city and long-standing cultural and commercial hub on the Ohio River;
  • Independence — a county government center and suburban community;
  • Highland Heights — home to a regional university and residential neighborhoods;
  • Fort Mitchell, Erlanger, Edgewood and Taylor Mill — suburban cities with retail and housing growth.

History and development

Kenton County was established in the 19th century and was named for the frontiersman Simon Kenton. Its river access promoted growth in the 1800s and early 1900s through trade, shipping, and industry. Over time the county evolved from an industrial river economy into a mixed metropolitan region closely tied to Cincinnati’s economy and transportation networks.

Economy, transport and institutions

The county’s economy blends local services, manufacturing, retail centers, and institutions of higher education. County government and regional agencies administer services from both seats. Major highways and commuter connections link residents to jobs across the tri-state metro area, while the county’s proximity to Cincinnati’s airport and business districts strengthens economic ties.

Culture, education and notable facts

Kenton County hosts parks, historic districts and cultural venues along the riverfront and in Covington. Northern Kentucky University, located in Highland Heights, is a significant educational and cultural presence. The county’s dual-seat arrangement and its role as a northern Kentucky gateway to Cincinnati are commonly noted distinctions.
