Kenai Peninsula Borough is a municipal region on the southern mainland of the U.S. state Alaska. It covers a long, fingerlike peninsula between Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska and combines coastal lowlands, mountain ranges and glaciers. The borough had a population of about 55,400 at the 2010 census, and its administrative center is Soldotna. For state-level context and resources see state information.
Geography and environment
The borough includes rugged terrain: coastal fjords, glacier-carved valleys and forested hills. The Kenai Mountains run along the spine of the peninsula, and several major rivers flow to the sea, supporting famously rich salmon runs. Parts of the coastline and interior are protected by national and state parks, which preserve marine wildlife, glaciers and bird habitat.
Communities and government
Population centers are distributed along highways and fjord shores rather than concentrated in a single city. Principal communities include:
- Soldotna (borough seat)
- Kenai
- Homer
- Seward
The borough government provides regional services such as land use planning, education funding support and emergency management while local cities and tribal governments administer many community services.
Economy and uses
Economic activity combines commercial and sport fishing, tourism, transportation, resource development and public services. Fisheries—especially salmon—are central to local livelihoods and culture. Tourism draws visitors for wildlife viewing, fishing lodges, glacier cruises and access to trails and parks. The proximity to Cook Inlet also links the peninsula to oil and gas activity and maritime commerce.
History, culture and recreation
The area has long been home to Indigenous peoples, notably the Dena'ina Athabascans, and later attracted Russian and American explorers and settlers. Today the peninsula is a major destination for outdoor recreation: angling, kayaking, hiking, glacier sightseeing and wildlife photography are common pursuits. Road and rail corridors connect many communities to Anchorage and provide scenic travel routes for residents and visitors.
