Kemi — town in Finnish Lapland

Geography and climate

Kemi occupies coastal lowlands and river delta terrain at the southern edge of Lapland. Winters are long and cold, with sea ice forming in the bay, while summers are short and cool. The town’s seaport and harbour are important ice-protected facilities that handle bulk cargo and timber products from the surrounding region.

History and development

The settlement grew from small fishing and trading hamlets into a port and industrial town during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Growth followed the exploitation of forest resources and the development of sawmills, pulp and paper production. Over time Kemi expanded its harbour and transport links, becoming a local hub for commerce and processing of natural resources.

Economy and infrastructure

Kemi’s economy combines heavy industry with services. Traditional sectors include forestry, pulp and paper and metal processing; the port supports exports and imports. The town is connected by road and rail to other parts of Lapland and the Gulf of Bothnia coast, and the wider Kemi–Tornio area shares regional airport and transport services.

Culture, tourism and notable features

Kemi is best known to visitors for winter attractions. The SnowCastle, rebuilt each winter from snow and ice, brings international tourists and features themed suites and sculpture. Icebreaker excursions—on preserved or operational vessels—allow visitors to experience Arctic sea ice and learn about icebreaking work. Local museums and events interpret seafaring, industry and northern life.
