Career and musical style

Gott began performing professionally in the late 1950s and developed a warm, flexible tenor well suited to popular ballads and melodic songs. His style blended traditional songcraft with contemporary pop arrangements of each era, allowing him to adapt to changing public tastes. He reached a wider international audience when he sang "Tausend Fenster" at the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest. Over the years he maintained a steady output of singles and albums and toured extensively in Central Europe and the German-speaking world.

Gott's recorded output was prolific: roughly one hundred studio albums and about as many compilation releases have been attributed to him. Later life and death

Gott remained professionally active well into his later years, continuing to record and to make public appearances. In September 2019 his family revealed he had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He died on 1 October 2019 in a hospital in Prague at the age of 80. His death prompted widespread tributes from fans, fellow artists and the media across Central Europe.
