Overview
Kanifing is one of eight Local Government Areas in The Gambia and contains the country’s largest urban and commercial cluster. The Kanifing Municipality lies immediately west of the national capital, Banjul, and includes Serrekunda, the Gambia’s largest town. Geography and administration
Kanifing stretches along the Atlantic coast and the western approaches to the mouth of the Gambia River, forming a continuous urban zone with neighboring Banjul and towns to the west. History and development
Historically the area that is now Kanifing saw substantial growth during and after the colonial period as trade and administration concentrated around the river mouth and port facilities. Over the second half of the 20th century Serrekunda and surrounding neighborhoods expanded from small settlements into large urban districts. Urban migration, commerce and transport links to Banjul have been central to its development.
