Born in Oslo, he became one of Norway’s best known voices on diet and public health, combining an academic career with active participation in national advisory bodies and public communication. His work spanned university teaching, administrative leadership and involvement in the development and dissemination of nutrition recommendations.
Academic career and university leadership
Norum’s professional life was closely tied to the University of Oslo. He was appointed as a docent in 1969 and promoted to full professor in 1972. Over the following decades he held senior administrative posts within the Faculty of Medicine, serving as vice dean from 1983 to 1985, dean from 1986 to 1988, and later as rector of the university from 1999 to 2001. His roles combined research, teaching and institutional governance at one of Norway’s principal universities.
Roles in public nutrition policy
From 1971 Norum was active in Statens ernæringsråd (the Norwegian National Nutrition Council), where he served multiple terms as chair. In this capacity he participated in translating scientific findings into recommendations intended for public health policy and consumer guidance. His career illustrates the interface between academic research and national-level advisory work on diet and health.
Public engagement and collaborations
Norum was noted for engaging with media and the public to explain nutrition science in accessible terms. He worked with popular figures in Norwegian food culture, including the television chef Ingrid Espelid Hovig, to promote informed food choices. Such collaborations helped bring evidence-based advice to a wider audience beyond the academic community.
Memberships and recognition
He was elected to the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 1986, reflecting his standing within the scientific community. His sustained presence on national councils and in university leadership positions marked him as an influential figure in both science policy and higher education.
