Júlio Pomar, GOL, GCM (10 January 1926 – 22 May 2018) was a painter from Portugal. He was born in Lisbon and developed a long career that spanned several stylistic phases, from post‑war neo‑realism to later neo‑expressionist work.
Career
Pomar first became active in the years immediately after World War II and is associated with the neo‑realist movement of the period (roughly 1945–1957). In subsequent decades his approach changed, and he embraced a more expressive, figurative language often described as neo‑expressionist. Throughout his life he worked in painting and drawing and exhibited widely in Portugal.
Other work
In addition to his fine art practice, Pomar produced illustrations, including artwork for a children's book by the American‑Portuguese novelist Richard Zimler. His career earned him national recognition, reflected in the postnominal honors GOL and GCM.
Death
Júlio Pomar died in a Lisbon hospital on 22 May 2018 at the age of 92.
