Juliusz Paetz

Ecclesiastical career

Paetz was born in Poznań and progressed through the clerical ranks to become a diocesan bishop. He was appointed Bishop of Łomża in 1982, a position he held until 1996, when he was named Archbishop of Poznań. As an archbishop he led an archdiocese with pastoral, administrative and teaching responsibilities typical for a metropolitan bishop in the Catholic Church.

Controversy and resignation

During his tenure in Poznań Paetz faced accusations that he had sexually harassed seminarians and younger priests. These complaints generated internal Church inquiries and considerable media attention in Poland. In 2002 his resignation from the see of Poznań was accepted by the Holy See; from that point he was listed as archbishop emeritus and ceased to exercise ordinary pastoral governance of the archdiocese.

Aftermath and reception

The case contributed to wider public debate in Poland about clerical misconduct, transparency and accountability within Church structures. Opinions about Paetz were divided: some defended him or questioned aspects of the accusations, while others emphasized victims' accounts and called for stronger protective measures for seminarians and clergy. In later years he lived away from public ministry and died in Pleszew in November 2019 at the age of 84.
