Geography and neighbours

The municipality occupied a largely forested and lake-dotted landscape with roads connecting it to larger nearby centres. Its immediate neighbours were:

Population and administration

At the beginning of 2014 the population of Juankoski was about 5,000 residents. Like many small Finnish municipalities, it managed local services such as schools and basic health care, while relying on regional centres for specialised functions. In 2017 Juankoski was merged into the city of Kuopio, becoming part of a larger municipal administration.

Economy, culture and notable facts

The local economy historically combined forestry, small-scale manufacturing and service activities supporting rural life. Outdoor recreation — fishing, boating and hiking among lakes and forests — is characteristic of the area and important for local identity and tourism. While Juankoski no longer exists as an independent municipality, its settlements, local institutions and landscape continue within the administrative boundaries of Kuopio.
