Jonathan Harris (born Jonathan Charasuchin; November 6, 1914 – November 3, 2002) was an American character actor whose career spanned stage, radio, film, television and voice work. He is most widely remembered for his portrayal of the conniving, ultimately comic Dr. Zachary Smith on the 1960s science-fiction series Lost in Space. Harris brought a distinctive blend of theatrical delivery, ad-libbing and panache to supporting roles throughout his long career.

Early life and training

Harris was born in The Bronx, New York City, and raised in New York. He attended James Monroe High School and began performing on stage and radio during his youth. Like many performers of his generation, he moved between live theatre and broadcast productions, developing the vocal control and timing that later defined many of his character parts.

Career and the role of Dr. Zachary Smith

Although Harris worked across multiple media, his national profile rests chiefly on his television work as Dr. Zachary Smith, introduced as an antagonist who sabotages the Jupiter 2 mission. Over the course of the series (1965–1968) his interpretation shifted from a sinister saboteur to a comic, self‑serving foil whose flamboyant mannerisms, clipped delivery and memorable lines made him a scene‑stealer and a pop‑culture touchstone. Harris contributed improvisations and character flourishes that reshaped the part and amplified its popularity.

Other work and style

Harris was frequently cast as eccentric or urbane figures, applying a theatrical sensibility to radio plays, stage productions, films and guest appearances on television anthologies and series. He also performed voice roles in animation and other recorded projects. Critics and fans have noted his flair for timing and his ability to make supporting characters vivid and distinctive.

Personal life and legacy

He was married to Gertrude Bregman from 1938 until his death. Harris died of heart failure on November 3, 2002, in Encino, California, three days before his 88th birthday. His performance as Dr. Smith remains a frequently cited example of how a skilled character actor can redefine a role and leave a lasting mark on popular culture.
