Jonas Furrer — Swiss statesman and early Federal Councillor

Early life and professional background

Born in the canton of Zurich, Furrer trained in law and established himself as a jurist and public official. His professional experience as an attorney and judge gave him a reputation for legal competence and moderation. Before joining the federal government he was active in cantonal politics and in debates that led to the adoption of the 1848 federal constitution.

Role in the founding federal state

When Switzerland reorganized itself following internal conflict in the 1840s, Furrer became one of the seven inaugural members of the Federal Council. He occupied leading roles in the early federal administration and was chosen to preside over the Confederation in its first year. Over more than a decade in office he helped to consolidate institutions, clarify the relationship between cantons and the federal authority, and strengthen the rule of law.

He died in office in 1861 and is commemorated as a founding statesman of the modern Swiss federal system.
