James "Jim" Marsh (April 26, 1946 – August 12, 2019) was an American professional basketball player who reached the National Basketball Association NBA after a collegiate career at the University of Southern California. He is best known for being a member of the inaugural-era Portland Trail Blazers team, appearing in the NBA during the 1971–72 season.
College and early career
Marsh played college basketball for USC, where he competed in a major collegiate program and developed the skills that led him to the professional level. Like many players of his era, Marsh moved from regional recognition to the national stage by performing within a competitive Pacific coast program and earning the opportunity to try out for professional teams.
Professional basketball
Marsh's pro career included a season with the Portland Trail Blazers; he suited up for Portland during the 1971–72 campaign and is listed among the players who helped establish the franchise's early roster. His time in the league was brief, which was not uncommon in the 1970s when rosters and opportunities fluctuated rapidly as the NBA and rival leagues evolved.
Later life and illness
In 2004 Marsh was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder often seen in former athletes and the general population. He lived with the condition for many years and remained connected to the basketball community. Marsh died on August 12, 2019, in Portland, Oregon, at the age of 73.
Legacy and notable facts
Although Marsh's time in the NBA was limited, he is remembered as part of the early history of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise and as one of the players who transitioned from a prominent collegiate program to professional ranks during a transformative era for the sport. His diagnosis with Parkinson's disease later in life underscores the long-term health challenges some former athletes face. For those researching players from the period or the formative years of the Blazers, Marsh represents the many athletes whose careers contributed to the growth of professional basketball in the United States.
