Jim McAnearney: Scottish Footballer, Coach and Manager

Playing career

McAnearney began his career in the post‑war era and spent most of his playing days with clubs in the English league system. He is most closely associated with Sheffield Wednesday and also appeared for Plymouth Argyle, Watford and Bradford City. Over the course of his playing career he developed a reputation as a dependable outfield player valued for his experience and professionalism.

Style and role

Although not a high‑profile star, McAnearney was known within clubs for his work ethic, tactical awareness and adaptability. Team managers appreciated players like him who could link play and help younger teammates settle into the professional game. His leadership qualities during the later stages of his playing days naturally led him into coaching.

Managerial and coaching career

After retiring as a player McAnearney moved into coaching and management. He had a brief joint managerial spell at Bradford City in 1968 alongside Tom Hallett, and later took charge of Rotherham United. He also managed non‑league sides including Frickley Athletic, Scarborough and Hallam. In addition to permanent posts, he served as a coach — and on occasion caretaker manager — at Sheffield Wednesday and worked on the coaching staff at Leeds United. His career exemplified the transition many former players made into player development and team preparation roles.

Later life and legacy

Following his football career McAnearney founded and ran a tool and engineering business, applying the practical discipline learned in sport to a new field. He remained respected by former colleagues and supporters for his long involvement in the game. McAnearney died on 14 March 2017 at the age of 81.
