Jim Bailey (Australian middle-distance runner)

Early life and education

Bailey was born in Sydney and raised in Parkes, New South Wales. He developed as an athlete in Australia before moving to the United States to attend university. At college he trained under a coach who later became widely influential in the sport.

Competitive career

While running for the University of Oregon under coach Bill Bowerman, Bailey won the mile at the 1955 NCAA championships, a major achievement for an international athlete competing in the American collegiate system. The following year he was selected for the Australian Olympic team and reached the semifinals of the 800 metres at the 1956 Summer Olympics, held in Melbourne. His NCAA title and Olympic appearance placed him among the better-known Australian middle-distance runners of the 1950s.

Later life

After his competitive peak, Bailey settled in the Pacific Northwest, living in Bellingham, Washington in the United States. He remained connected to the running community and to the history of collegiate athletics through acquaintances and former teammates. He died in hospice care on 31 March 2020 at the age of 90.
