Geography and environment

Jiaozuo occupies a transitional zone of hills and low mountains to the north and agricultural plains to the south. This blend of terrain has shaped local land use: uplands are forested or conserved for scenic areas, while plains support farming and urban expansion. The city's climate is temperate with distinct seasons and enough rainfall to sustain crops in the plain areas.

Economy and transport

For much of the 20th century Jiaozuo's economy was dominated by coal mining and heavy industry. In recent decades authorities and companies have worked to diversify the local economy into light manufacturing, machinery, building materials, chemical processing, energy and services. Tourism, driven by nearby natural attractions, has become an increasingly important source of revenue. Jiaozuo is served by regional railways, expressways and local transit connections that link it with Henan's capital and other regional centers.

History and development

The area around Jiaozuo has been settled for millennia as part of central China's agricultural heartland, but its modern urban growth accelerated with discovery and exploitation of mineral resources. Industrialization in the 20th century expanded towns and created an urban core; administrative reorganization established Jiaozuo as a prefecture-level city overseeing several districts and counties.

Culture, tourism and notable facts

Jiaozuo is best known to many visitors for its scenic and geologic attractions. The region offers canyon scenery, waterfalls and hiking routes—most famously the Yuntai Mountain scenic area, which draws domestic and international tourists for its landscapes and outdoor recreation. The city also preserves elements of its industrial heritage even as it promotes environmental recovery and urban renewal. Local cuisine and festivals reflect Henan's broader cultural traditions.
