János Horváth
Hungarian economist and politician (1921–2019). MP in 1945–1947 and 1998–2014; emigrated to the United States and later returned to Hungary. Noted for being both the youngest and, decades later, the oldest serving MP.
János Horváth (7 November 1921 – 25 November 2019) was a Hungarian economist and public figure whose career spanned several countries and political eras. He first entered public life as a young member of Hungary's post‑war National Assembly, later emigrated to the United States where he worked in economics and civic life, and after the end of Hungary's communist period returned to serve again in the Hungarian parliament. His long life made him a symbol of continuity across the turbulent twentieth century in Central Europe.

Early political career and first parliamentary service
Horváth was elected to the National Assembly immediately after World War II and served from 1945 to 1947. At that time he was among the youngest deputies in the legislature, representing a generation that had experienced war, revolutionary change and the beginnings of a new political order. The immediate post‑war assembly was charged with reshaping Hungary's institutions in the face of occupation, social upheaval and shifting international influence.
Life in the United States and civic engagement
Following political changes in Hungary and the consolidation of communist rule, Horváth left the country and settled in the United States. There he pursued a career as an economist and was active in the Hungarian émigré community and in public affairs. In 1992 he stood as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Indiana, running in a contest that included incumbent Andrew Jacobs Jr.. His candidacy reflected long‑standing ties to the region and to Hungarian Americans in the state of Indiana.
Return to Hungary and later parliamentary service
After the collapse of communist rule in Hungary and the political transformations of 1989–1990, Horváth returned to Hungarian public life. He was elected again to the National Assembly in 1998 and served continuously until 2014. During these years he was one of the assembly's most senior members; from 2003 until his retirement he was widely recognized as the oldest serving MP, while the contrast with his early career as one of the youngest deputies remained a notable biographical detail.
Legacy and significance
Horváth's life illustrates several broad themes of twentieth‑century Central European history: political rupture and exile, the role of émigré professionals in host countries, and the return of émigrés to participate in post‑communist governance. He contributed to public debate both as an economist and as a lawmaker, drawing on experience from two political systems. Horváth died in Budapest on 25 November 2019 at the age of 98.
