Design and characteristics

Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the building uses glass and steel to create a continuous, semi-translucent exterior and an expansive interior public concourse beneath a vaulted roof. The Thompson Center continues to function primarily as a hub for state agency offices and public counters, and the atrium has been used for exhibitions, civic gatherings and retail kiosks. Proposals to alter the building's ownership or use have periodically become matters of public debate. In 2015 and again in 2017, then-Governor Bruce Rauner proposed selling or redeveloping the property; a legislative committee to study the idea was announced in early 2017 by House Speaker Michael Madigan. Those proposals sparked discussion about preserving an unusual piece of Chicago architecture versus transferring a costly state asset to private ownership.

Notable incidents and current considerations

The Thompson Center has also been the site of notable public-safety and civic incidents. On February 13, 2018, Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer was fatally shot while pursuing a suspect near the building, an event that prompted renewed attention to security around major public facilities. More broadly, the building’s future—whether retained as state-owned office space, renovated, or sold and repurposed—has been part of ongoing discussion among elected officials, preservationists, and developers.
