Islamabad Capital Territory

Geography and area

The territory covers roughly 1165.5 square kilometres, of which the formally developed city area is about 906 km². By area the ICT is larger than the Faroe Islands but smaller than Mauritius. Its terrain rises to the north where the Margalla Hills form a wooded backdrop, and includes river valleys, reservoirs and planted green belts. Natural features such as hill slopes, streams and the urban forest shape local land use and recreation.

History and planning

Islamabad and its surrounding territory were selected and developed in the 1960s as a planned replacement for the former capital. The project emphasized orderly sectors, wide boulevards and separate zones for government, residential and commercial use. Over decades the ICT expanded as national institutions, residences for public servants and diplomatic missions were established.

Administration and institutions

The ICT hosts national ministries, the legislature, the Supreme Court and presidential offices, as well as most foreign embassies and high commissions. Municipal services, urban planning and major land management responsibilities are executed by federal and specially designated municipal authorities. Because it is a federal territory, governance structures differ from those of provinces and are oriented to national-level functions.

Economy, transport and services

Economic activity in the territory is dominated by government services, diplomatic presence, education and professional services. The territory is served by major road links and an international airport that connect it with other regions. Public institutions, universities, hospitals and cultural venues concentrate services that support both residents and visitors.

Conservation, recreation and character

Margalla Hills National Park, urban green belts and reservoirs offer recreation, hiking and wildlife habitat close to the city. The ICT’s planned layout, combined with protected natural areas, gives it a distinctive character among the country’s administrative units: both a working seat of government and a residential, recreational capital region.
