Career and official roles

Somparé's career spanned diplomacy, party organisation and parliamentary leadership. He represented Guinea abroad as a career diplomat and served as Ambassador to France from 1978 to 1984, a post that placed him at the centre of relations with one of Guinea's most important international partners. Later he became a key figure in the PUP, the party that governed Guinea for much of the era of President Lansana Conté.

In party politics he was Secretary-General of the Unity and Progress Party from 1995 until 2002. Subsequently he was elected President (Speaker) of the National Assembly of Guinea in 2002, a position he held until 2008. As head of the legislature he conducted parliamentary business, represented the Assembly in official functions and occupied a constitutionally significant place in the line of succession.

2008 succession crisis and interim presidency

Following the death of President Lansana Conté on 22 December 2008, Somparé, as President of the National Assembly, asserted his constitutional right to assume interim leadership of the state. His claim to the interim presidency was brief: a military faction quickly seized power and announced a junta, curtailing Somparé's ability to lead the transition. The episode underscored the fragile balance between constitutional order and military intervention in Guinea's contemporary politics.
