Overview
Imst is a small Austrian town and the administrative centre of the Imst District. Located in the western part of the state, it lies on the banks of the Inn river and is roughly 50 kilometres west of Innsbruck. The town belongs to the federal Austria and to the Tyrol region. As of 1 January 2019, its population was recorded at 10,628 residents.
Geography and character
Imst sits in a valley surrounded by alpine foothills and serves as a local crossroads for access to side valleys and mountain routes. Its setting along the Inn gives the municipality a mixed character of riverside lowlands and steep, forested slopes. The built environment combines a compact historic centre with residential districts and small industrial and service areas that support the surrounding rural communities.
History and culture
Imst developed as a market and administrative settlement on traditional trade routes through the Alps. Over centuries the town preserved a core of historical streets, civic buildings and parish churches that reflect Tyrolean architectural traditions. Local cultural life includes seasonal festivals and folk customs, among them masked carnival celebrations that attract visitors from the region.
Economy and recreation
Today Imst’s economy mixes public administration, tourism, retail and light industry. The surrounding mountains and rivers make it a base for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing and winter sports, while the nearby valleys serve as gateways to broader alpine destinations. Small businesses and hospitality services play an important role in the local economy.
