The Ilocos Region (Region I) is a political and administrative region in the northwest of Luzon in the Philippines. Its regional center is San Fernando, La Union. The name reflects the historical and cultural prominence of Ilocano communities, but the region is diverse in language and heritage. For an official overview see regional information.

Provinces and geography

Region I comprises four provinces: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. These provinces extend along the western coast and inland plains, with landscapes ranging from coastal shores and wind-swept headlands to fertile river valleys and upland plateaus. A concise list of the provinces is available at the provinces page. Notable subregions include the historic town of Vigan in Ilocos Sur and the broad Lingayen Gulf shoreline in Pangasinan.

People and language

Many residents identify as Ilocano and speak the Ilocano language, a major Austronesian language in northern Philippines. Pangasinan is home to a substantial Pangasinense population with its own language and culture; about one-quarter of the region’s inhabitants belong to this group, so the single name "Ilocos" does not fully describe the region’s ethnic mix.

History and cultural landmarks

The area has deep precolonial roots and was significantly shaped during the Spanish colonial period, which left visible influences in architecture, religion and town planning. Key heritage sites include the cobblestone streets and Spanish-era houses of Vigan, the baroque Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte, and traditional festivals that celebrate local history and faith.

Economy, resources and tourism

Agriculture is central to local livelihoods, with rice, tobacco and other crops cultivated on extensive plains. Fishing and coastal activities support many communities. Tourism has grown around natural attractions (beaches, windmills, islands), historic towns and religious sites; for example, Ilocos Norte attracts visitors to its wind farms and colonial churches while Pangasinan is known for island-dotted bays.

Distinctions and contemporary notes

  • Region I is administratively Region I but culturally plural; the Ilocano identity is prominent without representing all groups fully.
  • Conservation of heritage towns and sustainable coastal management are ongoing regional concerns.
