Ilkka Kalevi Nummisto (24 April 1944 – 29 June 2019) was a Finnish athlete best known as a sprint canoeist who later became a notable competitor in strength athletics. As a representative of Finland he raced in multiple Olympic regattas and, after retiring from canoeing, appeared repeatedly at the highest level of international strongman competition. Nummisto competed at four Summer Olympic Games during the 1960s and 1970s. He took part in the Olympic regattas in 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976. His strongest Olympic result came in the K-4 1000 metre event at the Mexico City Games in 1968, where his crew finished fifth. The K-4 1000 m is a team sprint event in a four-person kayak that demands synchrony, speed and endurance over a kilometer course.
Transition to strength athletics
Following his canoeing career, Nummisto moved into strength sports and became a familiar figure in international strongman contests. Between 1986 and 1992 he reached the finals of the World's Strongest Man on five occasions, demonstrating remarkable athletic longevity by competing at an elite level in two very different disciplines.
