Ijevan — city and administrative centre of Tavush Province, Armenia

Name and historical notes

Local tradition holds that a town existed here in antiquity and that the site may have been settled or fortified in the era of early Armenian kings; some accounts associate foundation legends with rulers such as Artavasdes I. The older name Karavansara is of Persian origin and literally refers to a caravanserai or roadside inn. Geography, population and administration

Situated along the Aghstev River, Ijevan serves as the largest population centre in its province. Census and municipal records in the early 21st century put the city's population at roughly twenty thousand residents, making it the most populous town in Tavush.
