Overview
Hubert-Folie was a small rural commune located in the historic region of Basse-Normandie, within the Calvados department in the northwest of France. Like many small French communes, it comprised agricultural land and a compact village settlement with local roads linking it to nearby towns. On 1 January 2019 Hubert-Folie ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it became part of the new commune Castine-en-Plaine.
Geography and characteristics
The locality typified Normandy's gently rolling countryside, where mixed farms, hedgerows and small woodlands predominate. Buildings commonly reflect regional architecture: modest stone or rendered houses, farmsteads and a local church or chapel that historically formed the community center. Small communes such as Hubert-Folie traditionally relied on local agriculture and nearby market towns for goods and services.
History and administrative change
France has a long tradition of very small communes established during the Revolution; over time administrative reforms encouraged voluntary mergers to improve service delivery and reduce costs. In the 2010s a wave of consolidations produced many "communes nouvelles." Hubert-Folie was merged into Castine-en-Plaine on 1 January 2019 as part of this process, a change intended to strengthen local governance while preserving local identity through delegated councils or town halls.
Local life and heritage
Even after merger, the former village retains its sense of place: communal events, agricultural rhythms and local landmarks continue to mark daily life. Historic registers, cadastral records and parish documentation for Hubert-Folie are typically kept by the new municipal administration, ensuring continuity of civil and cultural records for residents and researchers.
