A device attached to a telephone line that answers calls and records messages when no one is available; historically tape-based, now largely solid-state and distinct from network voicemail.
Answering machine (also called answerphone, ansaphone, ansafone or Telephone Answering Device, TAD) is a device that automatically answers incoming telephone calls and records a caller's message when the recipient does not pick up. An answering machine is physically connected to a household or office telephone line and plays a prerecorded outgoing announcement. After the announcement, the caller can leave a message; the signal that marks the end of the recorded announcement is commonly known as "the beep."
