Born in the province of La Rioja, Olivares combined technical training with ties to rural and regional communities.

Life and career

Trained as an engineer, Olivares worked in technical and agricultural spheres before entering national politics. He was known locally as an agricultural producer and as a public servant who sought to bridge technical knowledge with policy-making. Within the UCR he aligned with colleagues focused on provincial development, infrastructure and the needs of rural constituencies.

Political activity and focus

During his term in the national legislature Olivares participated in debates on issues affecting provinces and the agricultural sector. He brought to his parliamentary work a background in engineering and farm management, which informed his contributions on topics such as regional development, transport and the rural economy. Colleagues described him as a figure with a practical, technical approach to public problems.

Attack and death

On 9 May 2019 Olivares and his adviser, Miguel Marcelo Yadón, were shot while in Buenos Aires. Both were seriously wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital; Yadón died shortly after being brought in. Olivares survived for three days but died of his injuries on 12 May 2019 at the age of 61. The attack shocked the nation, prompted a criminal investigation and led to expressions of condolence across the political spectrum.

Legacy and significance

Olivares is remembered in his native province and among peers for combining professional experience in engineering and agriculture with public service. His death highlighted concerns about political violence and security for public officials, and it produced renewed attention to the investigation and judicial response.
