Héctor Morera Vega (20 February 1926 – 23 December 2017) was a Costa Rican Roman Catholic prelate who led the Diocese of Tilarán for more than two decades. Born in the town of Tilarán, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1949 and later consecrated bishop, serving his native region as a pastoral leader, administrator, and public figure until his retirement in 2002.

Early life and ordination

Morera Vega grew up in Tilarán, a community in the northwestern province of Guanacaste. He entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1949, beginning a ministry that would span the transformative decades of the mid-20th century. As a priest he ministered during the period of the Second Vatican Council and its aftermath, a time when parishes and dioceses implemented liturgical and pastoral reforms.

Episcopal ministry in Tilarán

In 1979 Morera Vega was appointed bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tilarán. He governed the diocese until 2002, a tenure marked by routine episcopal duties—celebrating sacraments, overseeing clergy, supporting Catholic education and charitable works—and by engagement with local social concerns. After stepping down he held the title of bishop emeritus of Tilarán.

Roles and contributions

As diocesan bishop, Morera Vega coordinated pastoral programs, confirmed generations of Catholics, and represented the Church in civic matters. His long service made him a familiar presence in regional religious life: presiding at major liturgical celebrations, fostering parish initiatives, and supporting activities for youth and the poor. His leadership connected parish communities across a largely rural diocese.
