Geography and natural features

The landscape is largely alpine and subalpine: steep valleys, high passes, glacial cirques and snow-capped summits. Much of the department adjoins Spain across the Pyrenees crest and contains protected areas and mountain plateaus. Visitors find scenic drives, hiking trails and winter sports facilities; a number of medicinal springs and spa towns also mark the lower valleys.

History and development

Created during the French Revolution, the department emerged from historic provinces of the south-western kingdom such as parts of Gascony and Bigorre. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, mountain transport, tourism and pilgrimage shaped its modernization while many rural communities preserved traditional pastoral and craft activities.
