Harry Frederick Oppenheimer

Early life and education

Oppenheimer was born in Kimberley, Northern Cape, a centre shaped by diamond mining. He grew up in Johannesburg and was educated in England at Charterhouse School before reading politics, philosophy and economics at Christ Church, Oxford. His father, Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, established a prominent presence in mining and finance; Harry built on that foundation while developing his own approach to business and public life.

Business leadership

Across several decades Oppenheimer held top positions in major firms. He served as chairman of the Anglo American Corporation for about a quarter of a century and was chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines for 27 years, retiring from those posts in the early 1980s. Under his stewardship these organisations expanded their international reach and professionalised many managerial and technical practices.

His style has been described as pragmatic and institution-focused. He emphasised long-term planning, investment in technical capacity and continuity of management. Personal life, death and legacy

He was married to Bridget Oppenheimer; the couple had two children. Their son, Nicholas (commonly known as Nicky) Oppenheimer, later became prominent in the same industries. In later life Harry Oppenheimer lived in Johannesburg, where he died on 19 August 2000 at the age of 92. His death was attributed to cancer. Bridget Oppenheimer died in October 2013.
