Acting career and notable screen roles

Wilson’s most widely reported screen appearance came in 1968, when he briefly played the companion Jamie McCrimmon in the Doctor Who serial "The Mind Robber." The part was usually played by Frazer Hines, and Wilson filled in for a short span of episodes when Hines was temporarily unavailable. That substitution has remained a point of interest among fans of Doctor Who because it is an uncommon example of a temporary recasting of a well-known companion character.

Beyond Doctor Who, Wilson appeared in a variety of British television productions across drama and procedural formats. His screen work included appearances in programmes such as Softly, Softly and the later series Monarch of the Glen, among other credits.

Hamish Wilson died on 26 March 2020 at the age of 77. He passed away from COVID-19 near his home in Rutherglen, in Lanarkshire. His brief on-screen substitution in Doctor Who and his long career in radio have left him remembered both by genre followers and by colleagues in broadcasting. Obituaries and tributes noted the breadth of his work across two different halves of the UK media: television acting and radio production.
