Overview

Halvard Magne Kausland (25 April 1945 – 21 December 2017) was a Norwegian jazz guitarist and composer who combined an active musical career with public service in arts administration. Born on Sotra in western Norway, he was part of the Norwegian jazz scene for decades, performing as a sideman, accompanist and band member for a variety of artists, including collaborations with singer-songwriter Ole Paus. Outside the concert hall he held senior positions in cultural institutions and was appointed acting director of Arts Council Norway from 1 November 1996 to 31 March 2000.

Musical career

Kausland worked primarily within jazz and popular music traditions, known for tasteful accompaniment, harmonic sensitivity and versatility across small-group and ensemble settings. He performed in clubs, studio sessions and stage productions, contributing both as a guitarist and as a composer. His playing was appreciated for its melodic approach and supportive role when accompanying singers and other instrumentalists.

Public service and administration

In the 1990s Kausland moved into cultural administration. His appointment as acting director of the Arts Council Norway placed him at the center of public cultural policy for a period that involved funding decisions, advising on arts development and representing Norwegian arts interests. Personal life

Kausland was married to entertainer Grethe Kausland from 1966 to 1979; she was a well-known Norwegian singer and actress. He was born in Sund, Sotra and later lived and worked in Oslo. He died in Oslo on 21 December 2017 from thyroid cancer, as reported the same day in Norwegian media, with his passing recorded in the city of Oslo.
