Győr has ancient origins: it developed where Roman, medieval and later Central European influences met. The town grew around a Roman settlement and later became an important episcopal and trading centre in the Middle Ages. It suffered damage during Ottoman wars but was substantially rebuilt, acquiring much of the Baroque appearance that characterizes its historic centre today.
Geography and urban character
The city occupies a riverside site at the meeting of several waterways including branches of the Danube basin. Its compact downtown features a network of pedestrian streets, baroque palaces, churches and public squares. Bridges and riverside promenades tie the older core to newer industrial and residential districts.
Economy, transport and education
Győr is an important industrial and logistics hub. It hosts major manufacturing, notably an international automotive plant, and a range of engineering and chemical firms. The city is well connected by motorway and rail between Budapest and Vienna, and by river transport. Széchenyi István University provides higher education and research that support the local economy.
