Origins and the National Olympic Committee

Guinea's National Olympic Committee was created in 1964 and granted official recognition by the International Olympic Committee in 1965. That recognition made it possible for Guinean athletes to enter the Olympic programme and to access certain development and training opportunities coordinated through international and regional sport bodies.

Participation record

The country made its Olympic debut at the 1968 Games. It did not attend the editions held in 1972 and 1976, but otherwise has been present at most Summer Games since 1968. Guinea has never fielded athletes at the Winter Olympic Games, which is typical for countries without winter sport traditions or facilities.

Sports, delegations and typical results

Guinean Olympians have most commonly competed in athletics (track and field), combat sports such as boxing and judo, and occasional entries in swimming and other individual events. Delegation sizes tend to be modest: a handful of athletes who qualify regionally or receive universality places. Performance is usually centred on gaining experience, competing in heats and preliminary rounds, and representing the country on the global stage.

Medals, development and significance

To date Guinea has not won an Olympic medal. That absence reflects factors such as limited funding, fewer high-performance training facilities, and the challenge of competing against countries with larger sport infrastructures. Participation remains important domestically because the Olympics can inspire athletes, attract attention to sport programs, and connect Guinea to international sporting networks and assistance programmes.
