Overview
Guéra is one of the 23 administrative regions of the Republic of Chad. Its regional capital is Mongo. The modern region was formed in 2002 when the earlier Guéra prefecture was reorganized into the current regional structure. For official references see the region page: Guéra region.
Geography and environment
The region occupies central Chad and includes a mix of plateaus, rocky outcrops and lowlands. Higher ground known locally as the Guéra massif gives the area a more varied relief than the surrounding Sahel plain. The climate ranges from semi-arid to sub-Sahelian, with seasonal rainfall that supports rainfed cultivation and natural savanna vegetation.
Wildlife and protected areas
Part of the internationally recognized Zakouma National Park lies within the region, making conservation an important concern. Zakouma is noted for its large mammals and has been the focus of anti-poaching and habitat protection efforts that have regional significance for biodiversity and tourism.
People, society and economy
Guéra is home to a number of ethnic groups typical of central Chad, including communities of Hadjerai and other local peoples. Livelihoods are largely based on subsistence agriculture, livestock herding and local trade centered on towns such as Mongo. Seasonal markets and rural production dominate the local economy.
Administration, history and infrastructure
Administratively the region is divided into departments and sub-prefectures that manage local governance, public services and development projects. The area has a long human presence and experienced administrative changes during colonial and post‑colonial reorganizations, culminating in the 2002 regional structure. Transport and public infrastructure are limited; many roads are vulnerable to seasonal conditions.
Challenges and significance
Key challenges include variability in rainfall, pressure on natural resources, human‑wildlife interactions around protected areas, and development needs such as improved roads, health and education services. At the same time, Guéra’s varied landscapes, cultural diversity and partial inclusion of Zakouma National Park make it an important region for conservation, rural livelihoods and regional identity.
