Andrzej Ciechanowiecki

Early life and professional direction

Ciechanowiecki trained as an art historian and developed expertise in European decorative arts and antiques. Over decades he built a reputation as a knowledgeable dealer and adviser to collectors and museums. Working from London, he participated in the trade of fine art and antiquities and used his knowledge and contacts to assemble and preserve items of historical value.

Collecting, scholarship and public service

Beyond commercial activity, Ciechanowiecki was active in scholarship and philanthropy. He published and lectured on aspects of material culture and supported conservation projects. He maintained long-standing relations with Polish cultural organisations, serving as an Honorary Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and holding membership in the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polish Academy of Sciences).

Ciechanowiecki Foundation and legacy

In 1986 he established the Ciechanowiecki Foundation at the Royal Castle in Warsaw to promote restoration, exhibitions and research connected with the Castle’s collections. Through donations, loans and advisory work, the foundation and Ciechanowiecki himself helped enhance museum holdings and supported conservation of historic interiors and decorative arts. His example illustrates how private collecting and public-minded giving can reinforce national heritage efforts.

Honors and recognition

• Recipient of Poland’s highest civil order, the Order of the White Eagle (Order of the White Eagle), awarded in recognition of lifetime contributions to culture.
• Awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and other decorations for cultural service and wartime merit.
• Decorated with medals such as the Gloria Artis Gold Medal and acknowledged by museums and academic bodies for his philanthropy and expertise.

Ciechanowiecki continued to act as a cultural intermediary until the end of his life. He died in London at the age of 91 on 2 November 2015 (death in London), leaving a legacy of donated works, institutional support and active involvement in the preservation of Polish and European art heritage.
