History and municipal formation

The present municipality was created on 1 January 2017 when several smaller municipalities agreed to merge to improve administrative efficiency and coordinate services. The union brought together five formerly independent communes, each with its own local identity and history:

• Grafschaft
• Münster‑Geschinen
• Niederwald
• Reckingen‑Gluringen

Geography and environment

Goms lies within a classic high‑valley environment carved by the upper reaches of the Rhône River. The landscape is characterized by steep valley sides, alpine meadows and forested slopes. Elevations vary considerably between valley floor and surrounding peaks, creating a climate and ecology typical of the inner Swiss Alps with cold winters and cool summers.
