Reckingen-Gluringen was a municipality-level community in the upper Goms valley (upper Rhone basin) that brought together the two neighbouring villages of Reckingen and Gluringen into a single local government. The combined territory now forms part of the larger municipality of Goms. Administratively it lay in the district of Goms in the canton of Valais (Wallis) in Switzerland. Official and historical references for the former municipality are available via the local municipal page: Reckingen-Gluringen.
Geography and components
The area occupied the high valley floor and nearby slopes of the upper Rhone, characterised by narrow meadows, terraced fields and alpine pastures. The former municipality included the two main villages, outlying hamlets and a ring of seasonal alpine pastures used for summer grazing. Traditional stone and wooden houses, village churches and chapels are characteristic built features that reflect centuries of mountain farming life. Local trails link the settlements to neighbouring valleys and mountain passes.
History and administrative changes
Reckingen and Gluringen have long local histories and preserved elements of medieval settlement and parish organisation. On 1 January 2004 the two independent municipalities formally merged to create the combined municipality of Reckingen-Gluringen, a move intended to pool administrative resources and municipal services. In a later step of municipal consolidation the territory became part of the wider municipality of Goms, reflecting a regional trend toward larger administrative units while aiming to preserve village identities.
Economy, culture and tourism
The local economy has traditionally rested on mixed mountain agriculture, cattle grazing on high pastures and small-scale dairy production. Over recent decades tourism has grown in importance: visitors are attracted by quiet alpine scenery, well-preserved village architecture and outdoor recreation. The upper Goms valley is known for extensive networks of hiking routes in summer and cross‑country skiing tracks in winter. Community festivals, church events and local crafts help maintain regional customs and the use of Swiss German dialects in everyday life.
Transport and services
Access is provided by the valley road and regional public transport services that connect communities of the upper Valais with lower-lying towns. Within the valley, well-maintained paths, bridleways and winter tracks provide links between villages and to recreational areas. As with many small mountain municipalities, decisions on schooling, waste management and public utilities have been a major factor in discussions about municipal mergers and cooperation.
