Brink's work frequently explored ethics, memory, and the social consequences of racial segregation. He used historical settings, contemporary realism and allegory to examine individual complicity and resistance. Writing bilingually allowed him to address both Afrikaans-speaking and international audiences; many of his novels were translated into other languages.

Historical role and controversies

During the 1960s and 1970s Brink associated with a generation of Afrikaans writers who sought to modernize the language's literature and to critique conservative politics. Several of his books were subject to censorship in South Africa. One of his best-known novels, A Dry White Season, brought international attention to the brutality of apartheid and was later adapted for film, increasing public debate outside South Africa.

Over his career he received numerous honours, including international awards and honorary doctorates. In February 2015 Brink died while returning to South Africa from Belgium, where he had been awarded an honorary degree.

Legacy

Brink is remembered for his insistence on the social responsibilities of writers and for expanding the reach of Afrikaans literature. His work influenced subsequent generations of South African authors and continues to be studied for its engagement with ethics, history and language.
