Abe Waddington (4 February 1893 – 28 October 1959) was an English professional sportsman best known for his county cricket career with Yorkshire. He appeared in two Test matches for England in 1920 and 1921 and also played association football for Halifax Town. Waddington's career took place in the immediate post‑World War I era, a time of rebuilding for English cricket and of frequent movement between county and international ranks.

Cricket career

Waddington spent the bulk of his playing life with Yorkshire in the County Championship, where he was regarded as a steady professional. He was seen primarily as a pace bowler who could also contribute useful lower‑order runs. His county performances brought him to national attention and briefly into the England side when selectors experimented with several players in the early 1920s.

Test appearances and context

Although selected for two Tests, Waddington did not establish a long international career. The post‑war England teams underwent considerable change as administrators and selectors assessed available players; many county professionals received short trials at Test level during this period. Waddington's international appearances are therefore best understood as part of that broader process of selection and reconstruction.

Playing style and reputation

Contemporaries described Waddington as a hardworking and dependable bowler who relied on pace, accuracy and persistence rather than prodigious variety. Within Yorkshire's disciplined squad he was appreciated for his team ethic and for sustaining pressure across long county fixtures, qualities valued in the professional game of his era.

Football and later life

In addition to cricket, Waddington turned out in association football for Halifax Town, reflecting a common pattern of dual‑sport participation among sportsmen in the early 20th century. After retiring from first‑class cricket he remained connected to local sporting circles and is remembered in regional sporting histories.
